:: Eden Chasers | The Water Baby ::

I'm so excited to introduce a new friend and project here at Chasing-Eden.  At the beginning of the new year, I knew I wanted to open up the writing here to include the heart stories and "chasing after Eden" moments of my friends and readers.  Thus, Project | Eden Chasers was born.  If you're interested in guest posting in this corner of the online world, please read these simple guidelines and connect with me!

Today, I'd like to invite you to take a moment and meet my friend, Christie!  We met several months back online and quickly discovered that our "Auggies" have several things in common - drumming, nicknames, one day and year apart for birthdays - to name a few!  I have since learned to treasure this wise woman's heart. Her authenticity and humility quietly work their way into your life as you read her encouragement, "every day life" stories, and devotionals.  Today, she is sharing a beautiful moment with her oldest, Eden...please take a moment to welcome her to Chasing-Eden.

Everyone has a favorite toy or stuffed animal growing up.  It becomes a friend, a comfort, and a confidant in the shadows of bedtime hours.  For Eden, it was her water babies.  She received "twin" water babies for her second birthday, and overnight she began to "mother" them.  These babies took baths with Eden, took naps with her (although there was one instance where she rolled over on a water baby, and you can only imagine what happened...), and she even named them "Bryce" and "Chloe," respectively.

Fast forward two years.  We were gathering canned goods and clothing to take to Open Arms Ministry for needy families in our area.  I always ask Eden to choose something from her room to include in our donation.  She usually chooses a shirt that she has grown out of, or a stuffed animal that she no longer played with.  But, on that day, she returned with "Bryce" in one hand, and the doll's shirt in the other.

"Mommy, will you help me dress Bryce?"  she asked, as we stacked cans and other food items into a box.

"Sure," I replied.  "Is Bryce going with us today?"

"No, I want to give Bryce to Open Arms, please," she explained.

My wheels began to turn.  This is her favorite doll.  Should I let her do this?

"Are you sure?" I questioned.  "Would you like to pick out something else?"

"No.  I mean, I have two water babies.  Some kids do not have food, or clothes, or even water babies.  I want a little girl to have one, just like me.  I think it would make her happy."

My eyes welled with tears.  God calls us to give our best.  Not our "hand me downs," our "forget me nots," our "I don't wants."  And the fact that I tried to convince my four year old's heart to think otherwise is just selfish and sinful parenting.  Lord, forgive me.

"'But cursed be the swindler who has a male in his flock and vows it, but sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord, for I am a great King,' says the Lord of hosts, 'and My name is feared among the nations.'" {Malachi 1:14}

Do you sacrifice your best to the Lord?  I know a four year old that does.
And I am sure "Bryce" is loved now more than ever.

Christie Elkins left her career as a social worker five years ago to do the things she said she never would: cloth diaper, homeschool, and drive a minivan.  Now a stay at home mama to three beautiful and brilliant kiddos, and wife to a handsome pastor/cop, she spends her days reading "just one more book." consuming mass amounts of chocolate and coffee, and writing about the adventure that the Lord has made their lives as a growing family of five, with the desire to please and honor God.  To find out more about Eden and her brothers, please visit

  1. Hi Alle,

    I've enjoyed browsing your blog and reading a little about your heart for the Lord. Your stories are very heartwarming, and Bryce sounds like she is an angel :) You're doing great things with this blog and I was blessed to stumble upon it.
