Inspiration Workshop | My Retro-Thrifty-Neato-Nifty Closet

I've been so excited to open my closet doors for you, friend and Gussy's "Inspiration Workshop" theme for April has given me the perfect opportunity!  *ahem* Without further ado.........

Wait a minute.

That's not right...I have much cuter clothes than these!  Is this my closet?  Who put all these drab-post-first-baby-haven't-lost-the-weight-icky clothes in here?  *sigh*  Let me close these doors.

Sorry friend, I seem to have goofed.  My wardrobe isn't what it used to be and to be honest I'm too embarrassed to show you the pieces I do have in there.  The only items I still wear and love are my scarves (handy for around the neck or on top of the head) and my growing collection of vintage and retro-inspired jewelry.  On a brighter note, Gussy's writing prompt has inspired me to get myself back into shape, focus on colors and styles that flatter my naturally "curvy girl" figure, and get some extra moo-la by unloading the rest of this depressing array of fabrics.

But hold on a minute...I don't want you to leave empty-handed.  Let me showcase my true sense of fashion by pulling together four outfits that may give you better insight into what used to (and someday will again) grace my hangers an dresser drawers.

1. A Day of Cleaning and Cooking | Starting with a simple pair of rolled up jeans, I'll couple that with a plain grey t-shirt (not too tight, not too baggy).  This is a simple backdrop for the splash of color I'll add with my bright red, retro earrings, a pair of chucks, and snazzy half apron and bandanna!  Now, my day of cleaning and cooking doesn't seem so dreary after all!  I especially love those polka dots on that apron!

2. A Night Out with My Man | I'm all about simplicity for a night out on the town.  Elegance and suffering for the sake of beauty are not my cup of tea, but feeling cute and being comfortable are definitely on my list!  So, I'll grab a comfy pair of TOMS, a sling purse that is easy to cart around for the evening, and some toned down jewelry (at least for me)...couple all of this with cute jeans, a soft cotton tank, and a sweater for the layer benefit and I'm good to go!

3. An Outing at the Park/Zoo | In all honesty, those turquoise feather earrings and bead necklace almost didn't make it in this collage.  Knowing I'll be chasing a 13-month old around definitely puts the kibosh on my typical accessory flair, but nevertheless, I snuck them into my virtual closet!  I love combining colors like coral and turquoise to give that unexpected pop to my wardrobe and this is the perfect kind of outing to let them shine!  With my rolled up shorts, a lacy tank peeks out under that adorable short-sleeved hoodie.  A pair of comfy rope sandals and the vintage-y backpack will help me keep up with my little guy!

4. Time for Church | This outfit screams vintage-girly and I LURVE it!  I'm currently in love with the tight floral patterns found on that clutch, which blend nicely with the soft rose pearls in the necklace and earrings.  Trouser jeans, a classic cardigan, and ruffly lace top provide the perfect backdrop for these pieces and I'll finish the look off with a pair of light pink aviators and some rosy-hued flats! Voila!

As I have been gathering bits of information for this post, I discovered that I was utilizing some great websites and eBooks to help guide my decision process.  Now, I'm toying with the idea of doing a small series here to dive into those resources and share them with you...who knows, maybe I'll get a giveaway together!  But enough about me...what are your favorite "go-to" fashion tips or pieces in your closet?  Any resources I should consider for this upcoming series!

  2. I love that last outfit - totally me!!

I've been reading what not to wear, and it has really helped me define my style and allow me to get rid of the clothing that was taking up space that I never wore :) Still a work in progress...but the scarves are always in style!

  7. I think I need to get that book, Aurie! I've got too much closet space dedicated to stuff that doesn't fit, or that I hate. Blah!

  8. Ah, it's so good to know that there are other mommies out there in the trenches of this with me! It only takes 9 months to pack it on and then when you have the little muffin, you're like..."What?! You only took up 7.10 lbs of space in there? What the heck am I supposed to do with the rest of the fluff?!" Thanks for stopping by, Ashlie! (P.S. Love how you spell your name...very lovely!)
